Consolidation Circuits and Building Confidence
Share
Today was another big milestone in my flight training journey at Parafield Airport. I went up with my instructor for some consolidation circuits, which are designed to sharpen the skills I’ve been developing in the circuit pattern.
We started with three laps, plus an intended missed approach. After landing, I dropped my instructor back at the eastern apron and set off again - this time on my subsequent solo. Taking off alone still feels surreal, but it’s becoming more natural with each flight.
This solo was a little tricky because I was directed to cross runways. At first, it felt overwhelming, but stopping at the holding points gave me the chance to reset and make the navigation much easier. Once in the air, my circuits went smoothly, and I was really happy with how I flew.
Of course, there are always things to improve. Occasionally I forget to switch the carb heat off, which is a small but important habit I need to tighten up. Another focus is my flare - I tend to leave it too late and sometimes pull back too abruptly, which can cause a little ballooning. But the main thing is that every landing was safe and controlled, which is the most important part of flying.
A special moment today was wearing my student pilot epaulettes for the first time since earning them on my first solo. It felt incredible to “look the part” while flying - a small reminder of how far I’ve already come in this experience.
Each flight adds a little more confidence, a little more skill, and a lot more passion. I’m proud of the progress so far and excited for what’s ahead.
